Comprehensive Dermatology Treatments for Medical Hair Loss

Hair loss can significantly impact an individual's self-esteem and quality of life, making effective treatment options a critical aspect of dermatological care. Medical hair loss encompasses a wide range of conditions, including both non-scarring types, such as alopecia areata, and scarring types, like lichen planopilaris, frontal fibrosing alopecia, traction alopecia, discoid lupus involving the scalp, and folliculitis decalvans. Understanding each condition and the common treatments available is essential for managing and mitigating hair loss effectively.

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata is a non-scarring, autoimmune condition characterized by sudden, patchy hair loss. Common treatments include corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation and stimulate hair growth, topical minoxidil to promote hair regrowth, and newer therapies like Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, which have shown promise in clinical trials. Light therapy may also be beneficial for some patients.

Lichen Planopilaris

Lichen planopilaris is a form of scarring alopecia that results in permanent hair loss. Treatment focuses on halting the progression of the disease and includes the use of corticosteroids (topical, intralesional, or oral) to reduce inflammation, antimalarial medications for their anti-inflammatory properties, and immunosuppressive agents like mycophenolate mofetil.

Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia

Frontal fibrosing alopecia causes a symmetrical band of hair loss at the front of the scalp and eyebrows. Treatments often mirror those for lichen planopilaris, with a focus on anti-inflammatory medications, including corticosteroids and antimalarial drugs. 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors have also been used to slow the progression of hair loss.

Traction Alopecia

Traction alopecia is caused by chronic pulling on the hair follicles and can be halted or reversed if diagnosed early. The primary treatment is the modification of hair care practices to avoid tension on the hair. Topical minoxidil may help in regrowth, and in more advanced cases, hair transplantation may be considered.

Discoid Lupus Erythematosus Involving the Scalp

Discoid lupus erythematosus involving the scalp is an autoimmune condition leading to scarring hair loss. Treatment includes potent topical steroids, antimalarial drugs like hydroxychloroquine to reduce inflammation, and immunosuppressants. Sun protection is also critical to prevent flares.

Folliculitis Decalvans

Folliculitis decalvans is a form of scarring hair loss characterized by inflammation and pustules on the scalp. Treatment typically involves antibiotics to address the underlying infection, corticosteroids to reduce inflammation, and isotretinoin in more severe cases. In some instances, surgical removal of the affected area may be necessary.

Each of these conditions requires a nuanced approach to treatment, emphasizing the importance of specialized dermatological care. By offering a range of therapies tailored to the specific type of hair loss, dermatologists can help patients manage their conditions effectively, improving their outlook and quality of life

I found true dermatology through a friend of mine who came here before and came in after discovering hair loss due to an immune reaction that the doctor was able to diagnose immediately. He started me off with some local injections and while i was quite concerned initially due to the large patch of baldness and after a few months it went away completely. Now i can't even spot where the bald soot used to be and i am truly thankful for the treatments. I'm now visiting Dr.sung for preventative hair loss treatments since this seems to be a genetic issue within the family. Highly recommend this caring and thoughtful doctor!!..who would haave thought hair loss could be fixed??!!!

I recently saw Dr sung for early signs of hair loss as this is something that runs in our family. He had administered five sessions of the true Derm PRP and several months later i had significant hair growth that people around me have been commenting on. I feel so much more confident and would highly recommend to others and who are also battling out similar conditions. In addition, Dr.sung is very kind and caring which added to the whole experience!
